About Florida Wilderness Programs....

Trails Carolina is an individualized therapeutic program for troubled adolescents ages 13-17. Set amid the beauty and serenity of the Blue Ridge Mountains, we use an integrated approach that combines traditional clinical therapies with wilderness and expedition interventions. Through challenging adventure-based activities, many students experience self-validating "peak experiences" and a heightened sense of control.

Our emphasis on preparation and transition ensures that students experience success throughout every phase of the program, thus building self-esteem and confidence. Throughout the program, we help students and their parents develop "reference points" -- tools for working through stumbling blocks that may lie ahead. In addition, by focusing on family systems and involving parents in therapy, we equip students and families with the ability to work through real-life challenges, setting the course for long-term success.

Trails Carolina provides a safe, nurturing environment for change. Students are never forced down paths they are not ready to take, but are taught coping skills that help them successfully transition through each phase of the program. By experiencing small victories along the way, students gradually discover the power within -- the ability to navigate through life's challenges with confidence, self-respect and fulfillment.

We firmly believe family involvement is critical to each student's growth and long-term success. We also want to provide support and insight for parents struggling to help an at-risk child. For this reason, family services are an integral part of the Trails program. In addition to the weekly phone calls with the child's primary therapist, we offer parents ongoing enrichment opportunities that parallel the student's progress through each of the program phases.

Experiential learning opportunities give students a new appreciation and enthusiasm for education and learning. Our comprehensive academics program pairs students with qualified teachers who offer both individual and group instruction. Students can earn up to five academic credits in a variety of subjects.

Each Trails student and family receives ongoing, individualized clinical services from our licensed therapists and counselors. Traditional, evidence-based treatment services are provided both on-campus and in the wilderness setting. These include:

  • Psychological, psycho-educational and personality assessments (optional)
  • Weekly individual therapy
  • Weekly group therapy
  • Treatment plan development and review
  • Daily group sessions with field counselors
  • Weekly family phone sessions with therapist
  • Family seminars with therapists
  • Transition planning
